Hook Lanegate Society https://hooklanegate.webnode.com/about-us/

During the late 1700's, when Common Land was enclosed, properties in Hook applied for grazing rights to enable them to continue rearing livestock for their needs. The properties that applied presumably had animals but insufficient land of their own.

Some of these properties still exist (just over 30), the residents of which, can either use the grazing or be paid a small sum of money for not having grazed animals. These areas of land generally comprise of verges and small swathes of herbage around the area although one 11 acre field was purchased some 100 years ago and this generates income from rent.

Generally the Stockers (LaneGate holders) meet once a year to discuss matters, receive the rents and check finances.

We are currently researching into reinstating the village pinfold which is located opposite the vicarage (behind the Church Lane Sign).
